The last door protector commissioned in 2015 was delivered just before the year’s end to a young woman who had just been accepted to the college of her choice. The acceptance included an unexpected bonus; a full scholarship based on her stellar portfolio and application, yet…she was a little insecure of deserving such good fortune!
I was unaware of these happenings when I created the piece in my studio, but given the strong diagonal composition, the art bespeaks of fast movement, with lots of things coming, yet whatever it is seems breezily and happily passing through.
The sunny color palette feels good, implying that the changes, although dizzying at times, will be auspicious. Various symbols and elements are there to invite happy transitions, offer possibilities of experiencing the moment, and trusting that she is in the right place and at the right time, doing what she loves.
Front and center is a glowing white-petal lotus, a symbol of purity, as these flowers bloom out of the muddy waters, yet the petals remain pure. White lotuses signify that our nature is pure and our spirit can reach enlightenment no matter how murky our lives can appear at any moment. The color white also portends that we will be supported in our efforts to grow when we dwell in our heart-mind and in the spirit of kindness, compassion and unconditional love toward all, including ourselves.
The white pearls gently curving out of the flower and out into the larger space are further examples that we can always be guided by our inner wisdom. The garnet crystal in the center of the pearls’ trail urges the woman to trust the magnificence of her gifts, her beauty and her talents.
The hummingbird is the bird of Joy, and it is here to remind her of the joy that comes from being alive and at peace with who we are. The lively bird counsels us to share our joyousness because acting and thinking with joy attracts kindred spirits to our lives.
The nine differently colored tourmaline stones, each color imbued with its own powerful protection from harm, are balanced on the opposite corner by gleaming turquoise colored metal flecks, portraying a wondrous sky filled with myriads of opportunities to fly. Both provide a perfect background for the Wish Fulfilling Mantra weaving and meandering around all the other symbols, strengthening them all and providing reassurance, every time she sees it, that she is protected and propelled to greatness no matter what she will face.
The day after the installation, the young woman texted me that she was not sure if the sacred art had affected her yet, but she and the family noticed a marked and positive attitudinal change in her older sister. Who knew?
